The letters analysed hereunder can be categorized under one theme: Contemporary Life and Problems. All the three letters depict real life experiences and the problems encountered. Every letter then ends with a solution statement or the conclusion, which serves as the action statement. I have explored the genre analysis herein.
The first letter titled “Bus, class hours clash” shows the problems that students go through in commuter colleges. A college called EWU is situated away from the major population centre and the students rely on STA bus services. The college’s course schedules do not consider the STA’s operating times. Most students finish their classes late (10 pm) when the bus services are not available. The students are therefore forced to end their classes early in order to catch up with the STA. This has a remarkable negative effect on the students’ quality of education and grades as they leave classes almost one hour early. The second letter talks about the great differences between the salaries of teachers as compared to that of hedge fund managers. On average, the letter depicts, one top hedge fund manager earns an equivalent of what 15,000 top teachers earn. The last letter is based on the rapid population growth rate and the resulting pressures on the environment. With the increase in population, managing the environment becomes very difficult. The author confesses that no single environmental issue could not be improved if the world’s population were small.
All the above-considered problems have their possible solutions. However, these bestowed with the powers to give such solutions have deliberately failed to act. In the first letter, both EWU and STA should work closely to ensure that all the classes are scheduled within the STA’s operating hours so that students are not faced with the above problems. The income of teachers should be reviewed. It is a shame that teachers earn such a peanut. The hedge fund managers’ income also be reduced. Finally, people must learn to be responsible so that the environmental problems are not magnified. Population control measures should be put in place. When these possible solutions are considered, then the above problems are most likely to be solved.
