Essay On Courage

I can define courage as the emotional strength s and the exercise of the will which helps in accomplishing the set goals in the midst of opposition, both internal and external. It normally comes together with bravery, perseverance, honesty, and enthusiasm (zest). It is the ability to confront uncertainty, danger, pain, fear, or intimidation. Courage exists in four types. They are physical courage, social courage, moral courage, and the creative courage. In this work, I have expounded on these types of courage, with examples in real life situation.
Physical courage is that aspect of courage in the midst of physical pain, threat of death, death, or hardship. This courage is very common among the fire fighters and the police officers. Taking an example of the 9/11 attack of World Trade Centre, the physical courage could easily be seen in our police officers. As everybody was fleeing to safety, the officers were entering the buildings so as to save lives. In spite of the dangers they were subjected to, they sacrificed their lives so as to save others. This was the greatest act of physical courage I have ever seen.
Moral courage can be defined as the ability to act rightly in the midst of popular opposition, discouragement, scandal, or shame. Moral courage lacks among several business individuals and corporations, leaders, terrorists, among others. For instance, the terrorists who planned the 9/11 attack which claimed the lives of close to three thousand people, lacked moral courage. Most businessmen and political leaders lack moral courage due to their selfish gains. They always engage in some activities which are morally doubtable. A businessman will always aim at making profit even if it means lying to the public. Various adverts are misleading, just as the sales and marketing teams in various firms. Politicians are the best liars as they are always prepared to lie even if other people would be affected negatively.
Social courage, also known as the civil courage, can be defined as the ability of the civilians to stand up against what is evil or unjust when the consequences of their actions might result in injury or death. We always witness this as citizens demonstrate in their quest for democracy and social justice. In some rural set-ups where there are beliefs in witchcraft, we always witness people standing against such acts and forcing the witch doctors to stop their actions. In schools when bullying was still pronounced, students could stand firm against this act and condemn the bullies.
Creative courage is seen among artists, scientists, technologists, among others. Taking music rap artists for instance; it is always their common business glorifying violence, drug abuse, and the view of women as mere sex objects. This is a great deviation from the normal. However, some artists have taken the lead by showing the society what it should truly be like. They do it due to their creative courage coupled with the moral and social courage.
The world is too big for us to change. However, if we exercise these forms of courage as individually, we can make the world a better place for life.
