Abstract
Over the years the number of cases of theft relating to car components has increased. This increase in cases of theft can be attributed to the fact that many people in both developed and developing nations are now able to purchase vehicles. The number of vehicles and vehicle parts demand has therefore increased over the years. The increase in theft cases is meant to meet the demand of car parts at cheaper prices.
Body of Paper
Headlights, airbags, wheels are commonly stolen car items. This is the case because most these car components are located at the exterior of vehicles. Robbers targeting these components do not need to break into vehicles to steal these items. These car items are also in the high demand in the consumer market because many people today have vehicles. The Middle classes in many societies have continued to expand. Andersen and Taylor write that “Middle classes have expanded, primarily as the result of increased access to education and middle-class occupations” (Andersen & Taylor, 2006, p.229). The expanding middle class means that many people in the middle class have high purchasing power. This accounts for the increased number of cars in society. The more the number of vehicles, the more the requirement for spares parts to these vehicles. These demands for these vehicle components have increased cases of theft with the aim of meeting this demand for components such as headlights, airbags, and wheels.
I know many people who have had these components stolen from their vehicles. Cases of theft related to such items are common place in many large cities. Bennett and Hess explain that “in many cities cars are dismantled, and the parts are cataloged. In some cities this business is so big that organized crime has been heavily involved” (Bennett & Hess,2006, p.431).These items can be better protected by making sure that people have insurances that can help them acquire new spare parts in case of theft incidences. Alternatively people should install security alarms in their vehicles so that they can be sensitized about the safety of their vehicles and any time. In addition, it is important that people be more vigilant about the areas that they park their vehicles so as to make sure that their vehicles are not broken into or to have their external parts of their vehicles stole. In this way, these car components can be better protected from theft.
