Selecting a subject for the street art really took me a long while to figure out what will draw. For many decades, common stereotypes of street art have developed amongst people simply because it was an art created by the thugs who wanted to vandalize the walls with their artworks. I believe that art should have the ability to express one’s self and make other people happy despite their problems in life. In addition, it is my choice to keep the subject simple is because there are some people who cannot understand what the artist was saying if the piece if too crowded with images. Based from this, I want to call myself as “The Jester.” I will be called by that name because jesters are also humorists; they perform to make people happy by saying witty lines and clowning. Like jesters, my goal for my street art is to make people happy and make them realize that despite the hardships of life, there are still reasons to smile. I intend my street art to be directed on all people; regardless of class, gender, ethnicity, and whether they have mental illness or not. As a street art, it is not unusual that the artwork will be subject to scrutiny and worse to vandalizing of other groups. I chose to draw two fellows bearing a message banner with the words: “Keep Smiling.” The reason I chose that is because in today’s busy world, many people are often exposed to stress and due to stress, sometimes they become irritated and smile less often. Smile might seem to be a silly notion but it can do wonders not only to the other people but to one’s self as well. I want to place my street art near the places where there are many people passing every day. Such places are as follows: markets, train stations, schools, and in the park. I want to use my artwork to give people the encouragement to smile and worry less. I sketched the pictures as big as possible because I wanted to capture people’s attention. Another reason for choosing a simple subject is that I believe that art does not need to be difficult for the eye. It will be best if people will see what I am trying to portray using only simple lines and colors. The image was initially sketched using a pencil but in order to enhance my street art, I also used the sign pen to highlight the contours of their faces. As a conclusion, I want to help and encourage the people to be carefree, especially those people who work as hard as they can in order to provide food for their family. They are the ones who inspired me to do this art because due to stress, they became irritated and smile less. I really wanted the people to remember that despite the problems there are still a lot of reasons to smile. Smile is a universal action which can be understood by the world. Smiling means happiness, but sometimes it can also mean as the end of the negativity in one’s life.
