Introduction
The three main characters of the play “Cat on a hot tin roof” Maggie, Brick, and Big Daddy. Maggie is a lonely, dissatisfied, and hysterical woman. This is evident from Maggie’s reaction when she realized that Brick was staring at her in the mirror. She herself knew that she had gone through “hideous transformation but Brick does not respond as she desired”. She was so desperate that Brick did not give her the attention that she required. Brick does not express the same desire and love that she gives and this makes her very bitter, nervous, and hard. Maggie’s behavior of constantly posing before the camera also illustrates her character because she wanted to attract attention from her husband. Though she is gorgeous and beautiful, Brick seemed not so much concerned because when she asked why he was staring at her his response was totally contrary to her expectation. She even looks more of a seducer than a wife, always changing clothes and posing before a mirror. (Taylor, 2006.p5) Her childlessness makes her to be referred to as “Maggie the cat” yet she used to call herself “Saint Maggie”. She then does not get space in Big Daddy’s household who used to view her as the “trophy wife”. Another very significant character is Brick a self-contained, broken, and untouchable man. Brick’s expression of homosexual desire for Skipper a high school friend who died leaving him to languish in liquor best describes his character traits. He always cry “my broken ankle” an injury he got while jumping hurdles while in high school. Even when he is extremely drunk he does not fail to mention to mention Skipper as the best friend he has ever got making Maggie to describe him as “Greek friend”. The homosexual desires bring him to judgment in the first and second Acts. The point when Daddy approaches what has been tenuously curbed, Brick wildly endeavors to avoid him, discharging his expressions of all hugeness. As he tells Daddy, their talks never emerge: nothing is said. The point when Daddy presses him, Brick uncovers why he yearns for "solid quite" why he might deny that their talks happen anyplace or imply anything: they are tormenting. Another critical character in this play is Big Daddy, brash millionaire. Maggie always referred him as an “old- fashioned adamant man” because he only loved his son as his rightful heir and did not regard his wife, Maggie. (Taylor, 2006.p34) Daddy believed that he returned from the grave. Daddy comes back from passing and releases the vanitas of his common belonging: a rich man can't purchase his existence. After years with a lady he can't stand, he is intent on following his yearning in all its brutality. Not just will he purchase a delightful lady; however he will cover her in minks, gag her with precious stones. Daddy is dangerous in his fetishism. As he will tell Brick, there is bit of stunning on the other side of the moon, "death’s country”. Daddy's stay in "death’s country" maybe demonstrates his memory of his planet ventures and the youngster whore specifically; his experience with that which progress might curb whatsoever expenses. In coming back from expiration's nation, Daddy might constrain his child to face his own particular yearning. Newman-Taylor end was the best because it ended at a point when both of them had reconciled. They agreed to put their differences and decided that their marriage must not be interfered by other not even their friends or family members.
The three main characters in the play ‘cat on a hot tin roof,’ Maggie, brick and big daddy portray different traits and each one of them performs one or two mistakes in their lives. The flaws they do impact on the kind of the role the act in the play. The imperfection for instance the first character, Maggie commits is her portrayal of desperation. (Taylor, 2006.p45) Maggie instead of portraying herself as a feminine in act one she kept on changing her cloths this scenario she plays as she seduces men. She is in the hunt of winning a man in her life though no one looks her way. Brick was watching her on the mirror and was asked if to live him alone. It was a heartbreaking part as Maggie contemplates on the essence of loving someone who does not love you back. She experiences loneliness due to her desire to love which has led her to be referred as the ‘cat’.
The other character that flaws in the act is Brick; essentially he is supposed to be dating Maggie but fails her since she does not love her as much as Maggie loved her. He embodies a much archetypal masculinity, he is almost a heart broken man basically due to his homosexual desire particularly for his dead companion and friend skipper. Brick is not appreciative since he does not appreciative the kind of life Margret background which was a humble. Brick as one of the main characters is expected to bring out the characterization aspect by being active in the play. He is living in guilt as his friend commits suicide when he confessed to him and it was rejected, skipper was gay.
Big daddy is also anther character in the play, he is buying women since he is a rich man, his immoral behavior goes beyond to choke them with diamonds the character is does flaws as he is much violent [person, he cannot withstand living with a woman for longer time. he is murderous, he even forces his son to do his desires, the essence of the ‘death’s country’ which depicts his role and influence. (Bloom, 2002.p34)
We meet the character in different scene, we learn of Maggie in act one, when she enters the house undressed and brick was taking a ‘shower‘Brick is taking a shower.Maggie enters and undresses..’. We meet learn of brick when he is with his wife. Big daddy we learn of him at the scene where he buys women and chuckle them with gold and his murderous nature. ‘Death’s country’.
The three main characters play a vital role in the play for example Maggie is portrayed as a cat to bring out the theme in the play as the play is titled as the cat in the roof depicts the live of Maggie I her marriage with brick . The issue of conflict arises when Maggie demands attention from her husband since his friend had died the essence of homosexuality depicted by two friends. Maggie is childless and this frustrates herb and hence her desperation. (Bloom, 2002.p54) The appearance of big daddy is actually to complicate the play and bring out the issue of conflict as he favors different person, he plays the role of a complicated character.
Basically the play shows the essence of the things that happen in the society as the issues to do with, deception, homosexuality, crimes and immorality. Wealth also is a depriving thong that causes conflicts.
