In this reading, Descartes takes a turn in his argument from the previous believe. He considers everything that is doubtful as false. By changing the approach, a different controversial ending is expected. He states that there exists no doubt about the existence of God. It is God who makes sure that all other doubts are true. By relying to our own reasoning and thoughts people deceive themselves since the thought can either be correct or erroneous.
He comes up with a statement that I am thinking and therefore I exist. The statement reaffirms that the fact that an individual is thinking right now proves his/her existence. Being capable of thought however does not prove anybody’s existence. For Descartes, God is the confirmation for the existence of clarity of distinct perceptions and truth.
The approach he took proof the existence of god is not very fulfilling. His ideas are not revolutionary compared to his previous ideas about minds nature and certainty. His proof of God is also not original but adopted from traditional scholastic material.
A perfect God proof is an idea itself thus it is refutable under considering his own argument of reasoning. Comparing existence to the properties of triangle is refuted under the fact that existence is a property of the world as triangle angles is the property of a triangle. It is not a property of God. Even though he basis argument of Gods existence on geometry, there is no evidence that a single triangle exists in the world and yet he emphasizes on Gods existence.
