Aside from the cultural difference between the education system in Saudi Arabia and the United States, there are other contrasting variances on the prevailing teaching methods of the two countries. Being exposed to the two styles of teaching have given me the opportunity to re-inspect the possibility of improving the level education in Saudi Arabia. The students in both countries deserve the best education by training and supporting the educators with updated teaching materials. This comparison is not done to belittle the effort of Saudi Arabia in their educational system, but to encourage continuous development in this sector.
First, the cultural difference in Saudi Arabia has allowed the classroom set-up to be different from the United States. Separating male and female students is mandatory in every school in Saudi Arabia. Some schools in the United States have exclusive school but the parents and the children have the option to attend a co-ed school. On the other hand, the classroom experience in Saudi Arabia may not be diverse and not well rounded due to this limitation. The Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia is not proactive in supporting the teachers who have conflicts with their students. Unlike the Department of Education in the United States, the office is involved in empowering the teachers with the right support in terms of student conflicts. Students in Saudi Arabia can be discerning in terms of teacher authority. As a result, teachers in Saudi Arabia need to be more assertive in their position in the classroom in order to command respect from the students. Having a strong personality could also help the teachers in Saudi Arabia to attract the attention of the students and follow the lesson inside the classroom. Most of the schools in the United States are equipped with the latest technology that could supplement the student’s learning. The classrooms in Saudi Arabia could incorporate the same technology such as audio-visual presentation that could offer a new learning experience to the students.
