Studying Intercultural Communication
Introduction
The context of this document will cover the study of intercultural communication as well as how can it enhance teaching and learning and the reasons for studying intercultural communication and problems that could arise if ever the teacher is not prepared of the cultural difference.
How the Study of Intercultural Communication Enhance Teaching and Learning
An intercultural communication function as an independent subject, the information is theoretically based in a certain discipline. On the other hand, it is often associated to subjects like economics, tourism and business studies with the purpose of offering students with the skills to perform in the professional field concerned. In some situations it is informed not only as skill and knowledge, but also with the purpose of promoting a proper attitude.
Reasons for Studying Intercultural Communication with Examples
One of the most essential reasons for studying intercultural communication is increased in self-awareness. It improves our knowledge of our own culture. For example, realizing how significant Christmas is to you by celebrating it in a place where they don't observe it.
Another reason is demographic changes. These are continuous demographic changes countries and areas experience. Example of this is undocumented people or refugees.
Understanding people will achieve more peace. It is about discovering norms that will value cultural differences. For example, several cultures combined to form one state.
Problems That May Arise If Teacher Is Not Aware of the Cultural Differences in Communication
If the instructor does not see the richness in student's interaction, she may incorrectly assume that a certain behavior is an expression of personality, possibly creating a judgment about that person, when basically the behavior is influenced more from the cultural level.
Conclusion
The study of intercultural communication is an essential subject. If the instructor is not aware of the student's certain behavior, it may lead to misunderstanding. In addition, intercultural communication will ensure the effectiveness of courses being lectured by understanding cultural differences.
