What Constitutes A Student Athlete?
Is this world different than that of Regular Student?
First speculations on the term “student athlete” would commonly convention the student role of athletics in higher education, usually in a particular specifity of athletics however not necessarily always the case. Student athletes are individuals who seek a professional career within the field of Athletics, just as a professional scholar in the academic field. It is mannerly in the athlete’s best interest that the institution(s) in which the individual enrolls into post-secondary education, provide high quality programs and high-quality competitive instructors who are devoted to looking out for them in the early stages of their career (Durrani, 2014).
What makes the student athlete different from the ordinary student is that they must often “jeopardize their academic success in order to accommodate their sports” (Durrani, 2014). It is crucial that the student has a realistic understanding of the negative possibilities in the field such as short/long-term injuries, health impediments, etc. that may withdraw their scholarship and or direct affiliation within the specific institution in which they are enrolled (Durrani, 2014). It is crucial to understand that what ultimately constitutes a student athlete is individual self-development, constant teamwork, and of course education. It is not only for the academically inclined to receive a good education, but an important achievement for sole athletes as well, as they are indeed “student” athletes after all; not simply athletes.
The model student athlete should mainly focus on his athleticism with a vivid outlook towards a professional career in athletics. However, that is to say that the athlete’s academic variation of their education should be looked at as equally crucial towards the overall success of the individual student (Durrani, 2014).
