Critical Analysis: Racism
Racism is one of the widest topics in the contemporary discussions, with various authors exploring the vice from diverse viewpoints. Some of the ideas advanced towards racism suggest that people use racism positively to develop the economies in their countries. Other scholars suggest that the vice is unacceptable and it ought to face objections. Gabrielle Berman and Yin Paradies take a reactive position to the widespread racism in the contemporary world. They suggest that racism should not be assumed as an effective strategy for building relations developing because it is inhuman (Gabrielle & Yin 2). He takes the front in opposing the racist ideas that most of the people advocate for among the people. This paper reviews the main points raised by the authors with the view of establishing the background that guided their study and analysis.
The background of the authors informed my mind persistently as analysed the research. Initially, the background of the authors regarding racism, tribalism and sexism made a strong impression that their interests resulted to a bias on their perspectives. Gabrielle and Yin have developed a continued zeal in researching and analyzing matters related to clashes and racial discrimination among the people. Yin has been in the field for over 15 years whereas Gabrielle has been in the field for over 10 years. With the interest in racial literature throughout their lives, the two authors presented the best choice for studying the situation in racism among different people in the world. The authors write widely in matters related to racial discrimination and other social problems that ail the contemporary society. Among the issues include tribalism in Africa, nepotism, sexism and religion based mistreatment.
Other works of the authors include Multiculturalism and anti-racism, Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage, Accommodating Diversity, and Migrancy, multiculturalism and Whiteness (Gabrielle & Yin 14). The works of the authors appear in books, journals, and periodicals. In the periodicals, they target mainly the institutions in America and other parts of the world. Some of the articles and journals appear online. The domains where most of the journals appear bear the .edu. The journal on racism appears online, ranking in the website http://bmw.curtin.edu.au/pubs/2009/Berman_etal_2008.pdf as a journal. It was released to the academic readers in 2008, making it one of the leading files addressing the racism menace in most areas in the world. The article came out on 26th august 2008 to address the social issues that most of the people passed through. It was part of a book printed in the same year to address ethnic and racial issues among different people across the face of the earth.
The publication of the article brought a range of effects on the work. Initially, more people read and understood matters related to racial discrimination that people in some places went through in their activities. As people got more information, the reactions of the people towards racial activities changed and they began to view the activities from the reality point. Racism came out as the vice that exposed the humanity to inhuman treatment. Many people lost their lives through racial activities while other still suffer from the serious consequences of the brutal treatment of racism. The authors presented the racial situation in most of the parts as a practice among the people, which aimed at lowering the status of the other people and making them ever subjective to them.
The piece makes the information concerning racism more relevant and entertaining to the readers. Although most writers shy from the exploring the subject of racial discrimination, Gabrielle & Yin indicate that racism exist among the people, and it has no benefits to the society. The authors insist that some people practise racism ignorantly whereas others have no knowledge of the real consequences of racism. Racial roots appear wide, and the authors insist that assuming a personal initiative could help eliminate the vices.
Strength about the authors includes their ability of addressing the issue of racism from a factual point of view and trying to minimize bias in their evaluations. Many people would prefer an approach that makes some people appear superior to others, which in itself makes up the core of racial discrimination. Ethically, the works of Gabrielle Berman and Yin Paradies act as the mark of ethical maturity and progression in modern literature. Most of the author concentrates on their personal jubilations and the effects of the reactions from the people affected ad end up holding on the material facts (Gabrielle & Yin 6). The results of such things come when the information given to the readers misses some key points, and the authors cannot frame the reasons for omission. At the same time, some of the authors include facts that do not exist, as they want to please the readers even with false information. However, Gabrielle Berman and Yin Paradies present facts in their raw nature, showing that their standards of ethical behaviour measure above the other authors (Gabrielle & Yin 9).
The article can function both as an independent viewpoint to the vices of racial and ethnic prejudices as well as a support to the views that people raise against the vice. Racism poses a challenge on the unity and the solidarity of the society. The practice of multiculturalism and racial diversity in modern liberal democracies has been hampered by lack of a clear definition of ‘racism’ and ‘anti-racism’ as well as confusion about the role of multiculturalism and racial unity in addressing disadvantage and combating racism. The complexity of the racial issues demeans the people who feel it and experience it from the start. Not only do they lose their esteem but also their dignity (Gabrielle & Yin 15). The human feeling in the people does not remain the same, as they feel lower than others do when despised under racial allegations. This only attracts detrimental consequences in the society, which explains the bad side of racism.
Racial discrimination does not attract reasonable benefits in the society. Racism creates big gaps between people from different parts of the world. People should understand that racism occurs at three different conceptual levels, which co-occur in practice. Internalized racism occurs when an individual incorporates the ideologies within their entire worldview, which serve to maintain or exacerbate unequal distribution of resources and opportunity across ethno-racial groups. Interpersonal racism mostly occurs when interactions between different people serve to maintain and worsen the unequal distribution of resources and opportunity across ethno-racial groups. Systemic racism occurs at times when the production and control, and access of informational and symbolic resources within and without society serve to maintain and exacerbate the unequal distribution of opportunity across ethno-racial groups.
