Gender equality in schools is a topic that has not gained a lot of attentions from authors until recently when the topic about single-sex schools erupted. There is that belief that there is gender equality in most of the schools where girls are treated the same way as boys. Sometimes back, girls had challenges getting admitted into high schools. At the moment, there are many girls in high schools than boys. However, gender equality should not be judged by the number of girls in schools as compared to that of boys.
According to Tamar (2011), gender equality does not exist yet. She justifies her point by giving the example of single-sex schools which gained fame, not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world. Gender equality cannot be gained when girls and boys learn in different schools. I support Tamar as I have also had challenges learning in a single-sex school. Gender equality in schools will be attained when people are ready to accept the fact that girls cannot be separated from boys and that they need each other for their academic successes.
Apart from single sex schools, gender inequality in schools arises when girls need to be treated better than boys, for instance, girls can get admitted to high school or college with a lower grade than a boy in the same course. When girls and boys are taught under the same standards they should be treated with equality and no special treatment offered. I cannot come to a conclusion on whether there is gender equality yet since there are a lot of factors which determines equality which most of them have not yet been met anywhere.
