All cells have what is called a primary structure, which is what determines the cell’s properties, or genetic code. That structure comprises a number of what may be called “chemical building blocks”, and it is the precise arrangement and chemical sequences of those building blocks that create the unique construction and function of any cell type. Bacteria cells are a relatively simple cell type and contain nucleotides, two types of acid: amino and fatty, and sugars. The nucleotides store and retrieve the cell’s biological information, or DNA and RNA, as well as having an important role in the transfers of energy. Their precise configuration and sequence defines the biological identity of the cell. The fatty acids are components of the cell membrane or wall, as well as functioning as a food reserve for the cell, and the amino acids create proteins for the cell, and can perform many different functions within the cell. The primary purpose of the sugars is to provide the cell’s chemical energy, and the exact sequence of different sugars in the cell controls the properties of the walls of the cell.
Water – arguably the most important substance on our planet to sustain life – makes up the great majority of the weight of a cell, and provides the environment for most of the chemical reactions that occur within the cell. The dipolar natures of water molecules (i.e. their relative positive and negative polarities) makes the water molecules not only stick to each other, but to have an attraction to the other cell molecules, including the membrane and protein molecules, making water the ideal solvent for the cells.
