With the continued change of climate, all the world leading to reduced rainfall, genetically modified foods have played a very significant role in ensuring that the hunger issues are addressed. This is because many people especially in developing countries are too poor to afford readily available foods. GM foods are easily to maintain as they do not require a lot of farm inputs as thus affordable to everyone. In addition, GM foods grow past and are resistant to pesticides. This means that farmers will harvest more often and thus having enough to eat and even sell the surplus. This will not only help alleviate poverty, but also address the hunger issue. If all countries could embrace GM foods, the issue of hunger will be a thing of the past (thecampaign 2).
It is true that GM foods have some effects to the environment. Some of this risks include the fact that the GM foods could be turn to weeds. Secondly, they might also serve as channels via which genes can move to other plants. Thirdly, GM foods can produce viruses that if not taken care of can be more virulent. Lastly, they can also initiate a perturbation that has effects on ecosystem. However, environment groups have been exaggerated these risks. This is because there is a need to gauge the risks that come with these foods and the benefits. In my opinion, the benefits outweigh the risk by a big margin in that they save lives of poor people (thecampaign 4).
The issue of GMO’s has also brought issues that are related to individual rights. This is not a burning issues per se. This is because it is individuals are the ones to decide the kind of food to buy. If they want to buy GM food, then it is their choice. The issue of GM controversy does not end here. In the recent past, we have heard big companies taking over what heretofore belonged to farmers. A good example is the case of a poor man from Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada, whose field was found contaminated with GM seeds in Monsanto. It is very sad that, after a long legal fight, he end up paying Monsanto Technology $15 fee per every acre. This is not fair because he is not to blame. This is because he does not manufacture the seeds; big companies do and should thus be held accountable for the contamination (percyschmeise 5).
