A good portion of one’s life is spent on obtaining a formal education, which ideally instills within the individual the ability to think critically and solve problems. As children mature into young adults, a set of behaviors or habits emerge. Some are inherent and some are cultivated. Students who are successful tend to cultivate good habits, which include time management and effective study techniques. They also have a clear vision of what they want to achieve. In addition, students who manage their time wisely have more control over their lives. They feel healthier, happier, and are generally less stressed out.
Time management essentially consists of the prioritization of tasks. It is a safeguard from procrastination. In particular, a typical time management method would consist of listing everything that needs to be accomplished in a week and then classifying them using A-B-C where A is the most important and C is the least. With the essential tasks identified, the duration for completing each item on the list is estimated and then a schedule is set for completing each task.
People have different ways of processing information; thus, have different learning styles. Students may be hands on, visual, or auditory learners. As such, students should study in the ways that are most effective for them. This can be in the form of active reading where notes are taken on the material being read; doing exercises from the text; or formulating questions based on a text that was read. These techniques can be used in order to check for comprehension. Alternatively, listening to recorded lectures from a class can also be performed, although ideally, notes from lectures should be reviewed within twenty-four hours in order for the student to cement the new information.
The most important habit of successful students is that they possess a vision for their life. They have a road map of where their life is going. This provides them with a purpose for all the hard work that they are currently doing. Some are motivated by the prospect of future personal success or by the attainment of a higher paying job, which will enable them to become a better provider for their family.
Students who cultivate good habits by practicing time management and effective study habits will be more successful than their passive and unmotivated peers. By maintaining a clear vision of where they want to go, they have a greater chance of winning in the race of life.
