Hotelschool The Hague – Hospitality Management: Admission Essay
Each one of us has – somewhere in our past – someone who has been the most influential in shaping our life. Sometimes it’s not a conscious thing; we may have to give the idea some thought, but then almost certainly the name will appear from our memories of the past. Try it; you’ll see that I am right. However, I don’t have to dredge through my memory banks. I have always known and am still very much aware how my parents were and are those very special people.
During my childhood, both of my parents constantly reminded me of the importance of their two key philosophies of life, which were:
- Be patient, especially in times of adversity – perseverance will reap rewards;
- Hard work always pays; never give up whatever the circumstances.
Now, all those years later, I still keep in mind those two important maxims. I am a confident and outgoing person, always ready to talk to people – even strangers – that I believe is one of the reasons that I became interested in hospitality management. It is one of the sectors in our society in which meeting new people is very much a part of everyday life. Hospitality management is a subject I have become deeply interested in, and as a consequence have decided to choose it as my major.
I am especially attracted to the Hotelschool in The Hague for a number of reasons. I am very interested in familiarizing myself with different cultures, and I know that Amsterdam – location of one of the two main campuses – is culturally a richly diverse city. In addition, I know that the Hotelschool has an enviable reputation as one of the best schools around and has a definite international focus. I also find the program to be exceptionally interesting and am confident that it is a perfect fit for me.
In addition to those guidelines for life that my parents gave me, I know that innovation adds an extra-special ingredient that makes for top quality hospitality, and that is why I constantly seek better ways to do things. Not least in my learning experiences has been hearing from others about the excellent reputation enjoyed by the Hotelschool. I have researched and assessed the courses available there and believe they offer the best match for my ambitions in the industry.
I am very much looking forward to studying there and achieving my long term objective of becoming a successful leader in the dynamic field of hospitality management. You can be sure that I will take maximum advantage of the first class education I will obtain there, following both of my parents’ guidelines. In other words, to be patient when times might be tough and to work hard, with the objective of being better qualified to perhaps run my own business in the future, as a result.
For as long as I can remember, it has always been my ethos to “join in” and to be “doing” rather than “observing.” As well as participating actively in class, which almost goes without saying, I intend to take part in extra-curricular activities such as table tennis and my other hobbies which include swimming, art and photography. The more clubs I join, the more people I will get to know, and the more contacts I will make as a result. Whilst the primary objective of the program is of course to learn and to graduate with the best possible results, I also intend to develop contacts and actively participate in networking, which I believe will be crucially important in the future for my career.
