Paul Roberts’ use of the college experience is different as compared to Eggers' use of the college experience. The reason for this is that in Roberts’ case he does not give college examples from his own experience. Rather, in his essay he makes up a fictional situation where students are required to write a 500-word essay over the weekend. Eggers uses examples drawn from his own personal experience while at college. He discusses how he was able to utilize his free time volunteering.
Another difference in the use of the college experience is how easy college students can relate to their stories. The example provided by Roberts’ is a situation that many students could easily relate to since many students experience the difficulty of typing an assignment. Therefore, his use of college experience can be used effectively to teach students the art of writing since it is very persuasive. On the other hand, the experience provided by Eggers is personal and some students may not be able to relate with his story. Therefore, his experience cannot be easily used to teach students since some students do not have enough free time while in college.
There is one similarity between the Roberts and Eggers' use of the college experience since they both use it to teach important lessons in their essay. Robert mainly concentrates on teaching college students how to write excellent papers. Similarly, Egger uses his own personal experience to encourage students to volunteer while at college. However, students utilize their free time differently with some participating in sports, clubs, and other extra curriculum activities. Therefore, only students who do not engage in other activities outside the classroom can utilize his lessons.
