Reflective essay
I could choose to revise one of the previous papers that I had written in the past before I improved my writing skills. The project that I am revising in this assignment was written about the impacts of child labor on academic achievement. I could choose to revise this project because I have reread the project and found out some grammatical and stylistic mistakes such as the following:
Child labor has brought about devastating effects on children which has translated to the class bias and stratification (Myself p. 5) – there should have been a comma before “Which”).
Looking back at the first week of assignments, how would you say your approach to reading and writing has changed? How do you know?
Looking back at the first week of assignments, I can say a lot has changed in my approach to reading and writing. I have noticed that in the past exams, I scored very demeaning grades due to my grammatical mistakes that were discovered in my papers. During the first week of assignments, I had problems completing my assignments since I could not write at sufficient speed that always resulted in late submissions. However currently, I have greatly improved on my grammar and writing skills. Additionally, my writing speed has improved sufficiently.
I have noticed a change in my assignments since I used to do most of them with much assistance from my classmates, teachers and family. Currently, I work on most of my assignments personally and still score impressive grades. Additionally, I took a lot of time reading articles and never used to consider punctuations within sentences. Nevertheless, I have greatly improved on my reading. I accurately use punctuations and intonations as they are used and intended in sentences. I also take lesser time while reading passages and most of my classmates have complemented me on these improvements. With the aforementioned evidences, I would say that my reading and writing skills have improved and I am confident I still have the potential to improve even more.
How might you use elements you have learned in this class to keep improving your writing as you continue through college?
The best thing that I have learned in class about reading and writing is the fact that more reading could improve both writing and reading skills. I have learned and practiced that reading materials often is very important in improving reading and writing skills. Additionally, after reading several items, in order to improve my writing skills, I need to write often. By making constant efforts at writing, I have learned that my writing skills will improve even more. Practicing writing is even an advantage if it is made a habit, therefore, practicing for few minutes every day could give me better results than practicing for hours once a week. In addition to these, I have realized that peer reviews are important in helping me develop my reading and writing skills. Through allowing other people to edit, proofread and point out flaws in my writings could greatly improve my writing skills. Finally, I have learned that reading silently is a good way of improving reading skills; however, in order to develop these skills even better, especially to improve on oral presentations, it is important that I learn to read aloud. Reading aloud is important since hearing out my words rather than simply looking at them could change my opinion of my writing skills and consequently my reading skills.
