What I Really Did During My Summer Vacation 1972 written by Nancy Henry to present an account on a summer vacation that was spent differently. It is generally about dissatisfaction by the youths. Usually, the youth expect to spend their holidays in carnival mood. However, this summer holiday was so different. The persona laments on the ruthlessness she encountered during her holidays. She spent her holiday doing some odd jobs that she expresses her dissatisfaction with. For instance, she was feeding dogs, a job that nobody was interested in doing. In this poem, the young girl emerges as responsible in the midst of other mischievous youths. Her brother is very mischievous. Instead of acting responsibly, she emerges as a very troublesome fellow who keeps on rubbing solders with the father. At the same time, other boys seem to be perverse because they are perceived by the ladies as so destructive. This is why the persona says that she would lose her girlness if she mingles with them. On the other hand, the father emerges as a very responsible parent. He strictly comes out as a disciplinarian who does not hesitate if he feels that one of his children has become out of order. For instance, he beats up his troublesome son when he finds him smoking.
Meanwhile, the poet in her pursuit to deliver her message uses a lot of figurative language. She uses a combination of alliteration (to, the); consonance (Mrs., here’s; every, day; knocked, stayed); repetition (a lot; got); rhyme (go, to); rhetoric question (And guess what, Mrs. Beela?) and symbolism (pot is used to symbolize cigarette). All these are done in order to make the poem appeal to all sorts of readers.
