Informative and Persuasive Presentation Proposal
The idea behind summer courses is to give people an opportunity to attend classes, which they could not take during regular semesters for various reasons. However, the major issue with summer classes in our university is the fact that they last for full fourteen weeks, thus they have no advantage over regular classes either in duration or in the intensity of the material taught. Such approach highly disadvantages business faculty and discourages people from attending summer classes.
Currently business faculty offers several full session courses, which last around fourteen weeks. Each course takes place once per week for 3 hours. The more course one takes, the longer he/she has to stay in the university during the day. Students have to follow a fixed schedule provided by the university, since there is only one section for a particular course in summer, while during regular semesters several sections are usually offered, so that students can select the one, which fits their schedule in the best way. Therefore, in summer students have to accept the predetermined schedule and to adjust their life accordingly.
Summer courses are very inconvenient for students not only because of the fixed schedules, but also due to the 14 week duration. Since these courses take place during the whole summer, students have no chance to take even a short break between their Spring and Fall semesters. Since courses take place every week and cannot be rescheduled, there is no possibility to plan even a short vacation. Moreover, students have to stay close to the university during the whole summer, thus they cannot take advantage of the opportunities to go abroad or to gain some practical experience by doing a short internship elsewhere.
Taking into consideration all the problems with the current schedule, it is possible to introduce several adjustments in order to make summer courses more attractive. The courses may be taught more intensively, thus reducing their duration to seven weeks. This would provide an opportunity to have two course sessions during summer, thus allowing students to fit courses into their schedule in a better way. This restructuring would encourage people to attend summer courses, since they will only have to commit to studies for seven weeks, and then they will be able to engage in other activities, such as a full time job. The new schedule is especially valuable for international students, who hope to go back home for summer, but currently cannot do so due to the courses.
The objective of the presentation is to modify summer courses of the business faculty and to make them more flexible. The main concerns of the current schedule are timetable rigidity and long duration. According to the proposed solution, courses should be offered more intensively, thus reducing their duration and offering two timeslots during summer. This change would attract students to attend summer courses and contribute to business faculty’s success.
