Leadership analysis about Rick Federico
Introduction
Rick Federico is the chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of P.F Chang. P.F Chang owns several restaurants in Asia and the US. Rick Federico understands the restaurant industry very well as he began his career as a junior staff in the industry and has risen through the ranks to be come a CEO in the industry. This means that h understands everyone’s job in different departments of the industry. He began his career as a dishwasher for a steak house and worked his way up the management chain. So he understands everyone’s job, from busboy to chef, to manager. Federico expects results from every team, manager and worker. But he expects no less from himself. He believes his greatest task as a leader involves remaining focused on his customers, his workers and the food they serve. As P.F. Chang’s grows, Federico wants to be sure that quality of service; atmosphere and food are always at their highest. During his tenure as the Chief Executive Officer, Rick Federico has brought significant changes on the ways the affairs of the company are managed. He introduced Pei Wei which is the firm’s chain of dinners in order to increase the firm’s accessibility. He has also been involved in plans to develop management teams and lay clear expectations for all the employees in the firm. This has helped him earn the respect of his managers, workers, customers and even the firm’s competitors. (Fred, 1997)

Rick Federico believes that he has the task of ensuring that he remains focused on his customers’ needs and workers’ service. He always wants the quality of the services they offer to be given the first priority. Rick Federico builds a strong team culture which has its main aim of ensuring the highest quality is always achieved. He gives the employees an opportunity to make decisions which can please the customers. He does not exercise a dictatorial type of leadership but instead gives a liberal approach in managing the affairs of the organization. He is also involved in the day to day activities of the organization and does not exercise a ‘boss’ leadership style where everything is done for you. He is ready to be corrected and acknowledges the obstacles that can be encountered in the industry. He involves all the staff in seeking solutions to the problems that they may have at hand. The leadership managerial roles in the organization which is exercised by Rick Federico include:
i. Informational
This category includes the following managerial roles:
a) Monitoring roles: He seeks and receives information from different sections of the organization and analyzes the information so as to carry out the most appropriate action.
b) Disseminating roles: the CEO forwards the gathered information to different departments and makes phone calls to the personnel who are responsible for handling the activities identified.
c) Spokesperson’s roles – He represents the organization to outsiders in reports, speeches and other activites that involve external stakeholders.
ii. Interpersonal
This category has the following roles:
a) Figurehead – He is the head of the organization and is therefore charged with the responsibility of carrying out ceremonial and symbolic duties for the organization.
b) Leader – He is the person who helps in motivating the employees and advising them on some important aspects of the organization.
c) Liaison – he coordinates the linkages of information between the workers, customers and other external stakeholders.
iii. Decisional
This category has the following roles:
a) Entrepreneur – He initiates new projects and identifies the areas of business development.
b) Disturbance handler – Carries out corrective actions incase there are conflicts in the organization.
c) Resource allocator – determines who the resources are allocated to.
Rick Federico performs the above mentioned roles for the organization so as to realize the success of the organization. He has led the organization through a series of reforms that has made the organization remain at the top in the restaurant industry.
