Writing is a journey. Really. Yes, many writers do say that. They might talk about their personal revelations that come to them while they are writing – writing prose or fiction. Authors might discuss the insight they achieve while they make poetry, and they might compare the process to something like a religious revelation. Sometimes these things that writers say sound silly. It sounds like they are just trying to make the act of writing sound especially important. Even, it seems, other writers try to make their profession intimidating. But writing is really not so complicated. It also is not something that only great intellectuals who already have established their fame can do. No, I have come to understand that the process of writing is for ordinary people to help them process a situation as well as learn from that processing.
When something big happens – a birth, a death, an engagement, a marriage – or even just something ordinary like a beautiful sunset these things need to be processed. Difficult events such as the breakup of a romance, a divorce, or a death can take possession of a mind. They can fill it and let you think of nothing else. These sad events need to be processed, they need to be understood, so that you can keep them in their proper proportion. At least, that is what I have come to find out through personal experience. If you keep emotions bottled up inside, they will torment you and tear at you until you no longer are yourself but instead are a bitter, angry, and raw with the emotion eating away at you.
Good, beautiful, and memorable things need to be recorded and processed, too. Your great achievements will continue to elate you and make you want to try for bigger and better successes when you record them. You will also understand what you did right, and you will be able to better repeat and build upon that success. Writing, you see, makes you stop, breath, and think about a moment – and event. It is also important to record beautiful things – wonderful events. These events do not need to be processed to get rid of their pain. No, they need to be processed if you want to fully understand their beauty. For example, to get the most out of a trip to Europe or some exotic local you can record it all in a journal. As you make the word pictures, you will make the special memories stick in your mind.
I used to hate writing. It was pure misery. There was no fun in it, no enjoyment. It was simple work. Writing meant sitting down to a blank piece of paper and journaling about an imaginary cat or trying to write about my best friend. This kind of writing usually turned into a half hour that was worse than a half hour spent in the chair of a dentist. Then I had a revelation. Writing could be about me. Even if no one listened to me when I talked, or noticed me all the time when I was just walking around, I could still express myself. Other people might not notice, but I could still express myself. I could get out of my system the painful emotions that some of my own relationships caused. It was a personal adventure. When I was depressed, down, or even elated, and I could not share any of this with someone else, I could always write it out. It felt like I was talking to a close friend who understood me. In a funny way, it would calm me down or solidify my pleasure. Writing is like therapy. Of course, I still didn’t always adore writing. Some assignments might be boring. But, I do like writing for myself, on my own time frame. One very important thing to make writing more fun and to make it more therapeutic is to use an actual piece of paper and a real pen instead of typing words on a screen. Using your hands, a pen, and a piece of paper makes you writing even more personal – it truly becomes a part of you.
As a person processes through the act of writing they put events in their own lives into perspective, emotions that appear in their hearts become understandable, and things that happen on the world stage or just in their community around them become easier to understand. Writing helps us to learn from situations. It also helps us to just simply learn. Yes, writing helps us to learn in school by putting an idea in our own words, forcing us to analyze the things that are presented in a class. Writing, though, also helps us learn other things: language, for example. Putting words to paper to form sentences that make sense to someone else when they read them is a great exercise to help you expand your vocabulary in your mother tongue. After all, it can get quite boring to write the same few words over and over and over again, and it is certainly boring to read the same words over and over again. However, writing is especially important for a person who is learning another language.
When an English speaker, or a speaker of a Romance language such as French or Spanish, learn a language that uses the same alphabet, then writing comes as a natural and easy extension of learning to speak the language. Writing down the words you hear and say helps you to visualize them and be able to picture the look of the word and the look of the idea or object that word represents at the same time. For someone who is learning to speak a language that uses a completely different alphabet the process of learning to write the language is more difficult. For example, an English speaker learning to speak Hindi has to learn how to recognize all kinds of different looking lines as representing ideas and objects. However, you still cannot really know a language until you can write the language. You cannot even really know how to speak a different language until you can read and write in it, too, for reading and writing give you much insight. When you cannot read in the language that you are learning to speak, then you can not even get around a place that speaks only that new language for you will not be able to read the signs. Writing helps you to process a new language and to make sense of it.
Writing helps you to process and to make sense of things. It helps you to process and to learn a new language, it helps you to process emotions, and it helps you to process and then either avoid or repeat certain events. Writing is a calming activity – it is like therapy. True, not all writing is fun, but writing for and about yourself can be relief as well as a helpful and enjoyable process. Some intellectuals can make the process of writing seem intimidating. Authors sometimes turn writing into a club, and the “inborn ability” to write is the secret password that lets you be admitted. However, I have come to understand that the process of writing is for ordinary people to help them process a situation as well as to help them learn from that processing. So why not try sitting down, picking up an actual pen, putting a blank piece of paper in front of you on a clear desk, and then letting the words flow – writing down any and everything that comes to your head.
