Personal Statement
I would like to apply to study Mechanical Engineering at your university as I feel I have the relevant qualifications, skills and enthusiasm required to achieve good results on the course.
My name is Taha, and I am an international student. I am proud to be the first member of my family to go to university. There are several reasons for my wanting to study Mechanical Engineering, the main one being that my ambition is to pursue a lifelong career in the industry.
I am attracted to the diversity of Mechanical Engineering. It is also consistent with my aptitude for maths and physics. I am enthusiastic about the teamwork involved in Mechanical Engineering. I like how people in the industry seem to often work in groups, in order to complete a project. I enjoy team work and spending time with different people. At school, I have participated in many extracurricular activities. In freshman year I was a member of the basketball club and chess club. In sophomore year I was actively involved with the soccer club. In both junior and senior years I was a member of the swimming club, and in the senior year I was also a member of gym club. Over the last few years I have won awards for both swimming and chess.
From what I know of the industry, supervising, problem solving and decision making play an important role in much of Mechanical Engineering. I have the passion to be self-motivated and the talent to work well consistently. My proficiency in maths means that I have the skills to solve real life problems. By nature, I tend to analyse problems in depth and then plan out an appropriate strategy for solving them.
I enjoy doing voluntary work and community service. In my sophomore and junior years I spent a great deal of time collecting money for disadvantaged families in Eastern Turkey. In Senior year I focussed by efforts on collecting money for a new school gym. Additionally I have taken part in various other projects such as collecting money for people in Japan, and helping to build the new school gym. I am very keen to continue voluntary work while studying at university. I enjoy helping others and contributing to worthwhile causes.
I am well-travelled and have visited many countries including Russia, Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, and Canada. Additionally, I have benefitted from several international learning opportunities. In my sophomore year I was sent to Denmark as an exchange student. Travelling is something I am keen to do more of as I enjoy learning about new places and cultures. I am interested in how people live in different parts of the world.
I am a people-person. I enjoy working with others in different capacities and I am able to communicate with people of all different ages and walks of life.
I am conscientious, dedicated and put one hundred per cent into everything I do. I am passionate about studying Mechanical Engineering and about pursuing a successful career in the industry.
