Slide 1: Mission: The two U.S. objectives for the Guadalcanal campaign were to deny Japan the use of the Solomon Islands which would threaten the allied supply routes between the U.S. and Australia & New Zealand, and to control Guadalcanal & Tulagi in the Solomon Islands as bases, which were elements in future allied plans to neutralize the Japanese base at New Britain.
Slide 2: Enemy: To try once again to retake Henderson Airfield, Japan sent 7,000 troops plus equipment and 3 warship groups comprising in total between 18 and 20 ships, including a battleship, heavy & light cruisers and destroyers. U.S. leaders were surprised by the scale of the well-prepared/rehearsed offensive.
Slide 3:Terrain & Weather: In the darkness the terrain afforded only glimpses of the enemy ships just 3,000 meters distant, with no real cover and the need to maneuver in shallow waters in the Savo Sound, one of the three approach channels; the others were Iron Bottom Sound and Sealark Channel. The rainy & foggy weather conditions and the darkness forced the U.S. forces to separate, adversely affecting command & control capabilities.
