Summary of readings
Architecture has gone a big change in the modern era. Though the works of the work of Mies Van der Rohe’s and his comrades who have redefined architectural boundaries by utilizing their simple concept of simplicity. They emphasized the importance of functionality and the adaptability of new materials. Rohe designed innovative buildings such as the Seagram with this same emphasis; material and functionality. The works of Rohe and his friends had a great influence on the society. For example the buildings Seagram tower in New York City was quite simple. He practiced simplicity in design although he carried with him the qualities of minimalism; less is more. In spite of the fact that his work was simple, his approach seemed to fail in sustaining a creative force as a style among the other modernists. In order to get a picture of the changes between the architecture of the nineteenth century and that of the twentieth century, the role that Mies Van der Rohe and his accomplices played is of great importance. It is worthy to note that it is his thoughts that have shaped the boundaries of modernists.
Mies and his friends started a new method of design when they embraced machines and mass production. This concept would later be duplicated by the modernists. They have also borrowed from miens concept of less is more by staying using that which is necessary. Most of the buildings that came later would be stripped for economical reasons and not for functionality. Instead of matching the qualities laid down by the modernists, they went all the way and became deplorable places to live in However, the use of machines by der Rohe and his accomplices helped bring sanity in the housing design. This is because a well build house is a good place that offers even peace of mind to the residents. But the issue of monitoring quality was also a dilemma.
