Motivation is the desire to perform an act in order to accomplish certain goals. A motivated person always maintains goal-oriented behaviors (Heider, 1988). Getting a drink to quench one's thirst, reading to pass an examination or gain knowledge of a certain context is an example of motivation. Biological needs, security issues, self-esteem, social or emotional needs activate a behavior. Most of the time, the word motivation is used to explain why a person decides to do something. An example is when a student wakes up every morning to review his or her course studies in order to pass exams with better grades.
Needs are one of the main reasons why a majority of people get motivated. The physiological needs such as eating, sleeping and drinking water, results in a behavioral pattern among people (Wong, 2000). In order to survive, one has to acquire the basic needs like food, shelter and clothing. Therefore, an individual would work hard in order to earn a living. The desire to have a certain lifestyle motivates some individuals to have a pattern of behavior. These patterns of behavior can mean having new friends, having different dress code and even trying new things like trying other jobs.
Through the work, the people are able to earn some income. This helps them acquire basic needs that help them push through life. Thus, every day a person must turn to work simply because the person knows that his lifestyle’s survivorship is based on the earnings of the organization (Heider, 1988). Those working needs to be secured, this is to assure them that, at the end of their hard work, there will always be a good pay and the job is guaranteed until a specific period. There is a desire for being recognized and being the overall where an individual manages, and everyone gives them the respect. The majority of those working aims to reach this point and so, they are always hardworking, and doing all that is required of them to earn a promotion to the next level.
Different organizations have different ways in which they motivate their employees. For instance, when an organization rewards the employees after certain duration, their morale would thus be boosted. There are rewards for those who meet specific goals within a specified period. The organization provides a clean, hygienic environment conducive for every employee (Wong, 2000). Increase in payment due to inflation and changes in economic growth are a healthy act. This helps maintain the lifestyle of those working within the organization, thus easing them the burden to cope with life. It makes them feel more motivated in their jobs and hence, will result in being productive at the place of work (Heider, 1988). Employers are also promoted to the next level where they have shown hard work and consistency in their jobs. Members within the organization are friendly to each other and to this extent helps in easing the tension of interacting and enhancing communication within themselves. This results to everybody working efficiently and motivated. The company also benefits by improving since everybody is individually motivated to accomplish the organization goals.
Every organization needs to meet the desires of their employees so that they can feel motivated (Wong, 2000). This will result in consistency in working and attainment of the organizational goals. This is because the employees will retain their jobs, and the organization will not be faced with a shortage of workers or new employees where they will take time to learn how to work within the organization. Motivation is important because it dictates or defines the behaviors of individuals in certain ways.
