Each one of us who has any ambition at all has at least some idea of what we intend to do with our life – who we want to be. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by and wanted to be involved in medicine in general, and radiology in particular. As time has passed and I have gained further knowledge about my chosen field, my objectives have become more sharply defined, more focused. I love studying anything and everything associated with radiology and I am now certain beyond any doubt that my goal is to become a Radiation Therapist. However, in order to achieve that I need to first achieve my shorter-term goals, which are:
- Then to gain admission to the Department of Radiological Sciences at Boise State University, where I intend to study in the Diagnostic Radiography program and in due course to leave BSU as one of that year’s top graduates.
Obtaining this scholarship is important to me on two counts. Very much the first reason is so that I can continue along my chosen path to progress through the various stages of my higher education. And the second reason is one of simple necessity, because I do not have sufficient financial means to proceed and to achieve all of my objectives without the support of a scholarship.
I am confident that I will succeed in my endeavours because I have become so utterly focused on that objective and am able to concentrate on my studies to the exclusion of virtually all other distractions, which in so many cases prevent students from realizing their core academic goals.
Overall, I believe that the language barrier is no longer a major issue for me. Though I do not yet dream in English, my everyday life including my studies and associated school work are actually no longer hampered by language difficulties. Those initial difficulties caused by my imperfect knowledge of English taught me that only sustained effort and determination overcomes such barriers to learning. In terms of my financial situation, the award of a scholarship will make all the difference – making it possible for me to continue my studies and to obtain – in due course – my BSU degree. At that point I know that I will then be eminently qualified to work towards my longer term career objective of becoming a Radiation Therapist.
Regarding the overall picture of how to finance my time at BSU, I have already proven that I am quite capable of finding a part-time job to earn money to support my studies, but my concern is that if I am to finish in the top echelon at the end of the program, I need to spend considerably more hours studying and fewer academically unproductive hours in a part-time job. For that reason alone, a scholarship would relieve a great deal of that financial pressure. I do not expect it to support me totally, but it will make that vital difference. My candid opinion is that my ambition and determination means that I could possibly still succeed without the scholarship. However, I am not content to just “scrape through.” I need to pass with flying colors; to be in that elite top group of graduates that are headhunted by the best employers.
Even with the support of the scholarship, I expect to have to find some type of part-time work to top up my finances, though hopefully a job taking up just a small number of my hours each week. Regrettably my family is not in a position to offer me monetary assistance. They would if they could as they are very keen for me to succeed, but they have to work hard just to support themselves.
Without overselling myself, I am sure that with my current background, the studies I have already undertaken, and my burning ambition to succeed in my chosen field, I will in the future be able to justify the faith invested in me by awarding me this scholarship to continue my education.
Thank you.
