Numerous incidents of gun violence have been reported in the past in the United States. These incidents have spread from the streets to the schools. Recently, in December 2012, gun attack that occurred in an elementary school increased the need to review the gun control policy in the United States. According to the article, the president lobbied the need to have a gun control policy, which would require that background checks be performed. However, the gun control bill was not passed as some senators; both republicans and democrats were against the gun control bill. This made President Obama criticize the senators. He indicated that they had failed their duties in protecting the lives of the families that suffer loss of lives due to gun violence.
Organizations such as the National Rifle Association viewed the gun control bill as a violation the gun rights of innocent and honest Americans. They indicated that passing such a bill would result to the federal government victimizing these Americans. Additionally, some of the republican senators indicated that even passing such a bill would not prevent such a scenario like the December one from happening. The reason was that criminals would not voluntarily submit themselves to background checks.
Nevertheless, President Obama indicated that he would continue to push the gun control bill to be passed. According to the article, he urged the members of the public that were supporting the gun control bill to be more relentless and have a commitment similar to the one those opposing the bill have. Further, the gun control bill would limit people with mental conditions and criminals from accessing guns (Associated Press).
