Obesity is a common nutrition problem in many countries in the world especially in developed countries like the United States of America. Australia is however on the lead in the number of obese people. This problem is now termed by the world health organization as a global epidemic. Obesity is the high intake of food and less use of the energy provided by the food ingested. This leads to an imbalance between the energy intake and output and an obese person is one with a body mass index of over 30 kg/m2. This problem has effects not only on the individual, but also on the society and a countries economy. It is the cause of health problems can cost the person his or her life. Obesity is associated with diabetes, heart problems, cancers and premature deaths. Obesity is an effect of issues in the society like fast food outlets likes the McDonalds, which are found everywhere. The fast food restaurants provide a quick meal at a low price and people tend to fall for the unhealthy food served in the fast food joints without considering its effects on their health. The other effect of society and its practices that cause obesity is the notion that being thin is a sign of suffering and poverty. The society does encourage people to eat healthy with the fast food restaurants located everywhere and the parents are not guiding their children on leading a healthy life by eating balanced and nutritious foods. Many people see thin people as people whom are not healthy and term the plumb as well off and having no problems that is why they are “healthy”. These results in a person taking in more food and doing nothing, which in turn results in weigh gain over time. The society approves of a good luxurious lifestyle where everyone wants to own a car. In the even, many people are no longer walking even if they are going to a local park or going out to do some shopping. People associate those without cars or those who do not drive with poverty and encourages people to enjoy the luxuries provided by driving oneself to any destination. Young children are growing up into the luxuries and bad eating habits, which in turn affects their eating habits and exercises. All this has reduced the amount of physical activities people engage in resulting in overweight and obese individuals in the society. Obesity has many effects on the life on the individual, the society and the economy of a country. The effects of obesity on an individual are numerous, but most of the times they do not acknowledge that their problem affects other people in the society. The society suffers because of the issue of obesity among its members. An obese individual has many health issues and cannot do many chores performed by a healthy individual. An obese individual is less active and does not find it easy to fit into the daily routine of other people. As a result, people have to help them perform simple tasks like bending to pick up goods.
Obesity is a serious health issue that causes many premature deaths and heath problems. Teens are now obese in many developed countries due to poor eating habits and lack of exercise. This reduces the overall productivity of the community because people are no longer in a position to perform many takes due to frequent health problems and the same people get tired easily. As a result, they spend most of their time at home or resting. This causes many economic strains and many employers are avoiding giving employment to obese individuals. This may make them feel unappreciated or unwanted, but the employers are trying to avoid problems associated with obesity.
The society has to deal with the health issues of the obese individuals because they have to constantly support them in one way or another. An obese individual is highly dependent on his or her family members and friends for support when they are not feeling well. The family spends a lot of money taking them to hospital and therapy. When an obese individual fall sick he or she depends on the people around them to nurse them back to health. The problem arises when the person has a heart attack or has a condition that cannot allow them to go to a health facility on their own. This means that people will have to work together to get to an ambulance. Many ambulance crew and nurses suffer from backaches and other injuries due to the weight they have to bear as they try to save the life of an obese individual. It is important for an obese individual to think about the family members and the loss the society suffers when they lose them to death prematurely. The relationship between the effects of obesity and the society are negative and none is beneficial to both the individual and the society. It is therefore, important to consider these things before one embarks on a careless lifestyle that will lead to serious health problems and later on cost the society as a whole. This relationship needs to be evaluated and measures put in place to stop the issue of obesity especially among the children and the teenagers. The relationship has no benefits at all and the society needs to encourage people to eat healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle in an effort to reduce the prevalence rates of obesity in the society.
