I agree with the opinion of the author that the importance of Congress has not changed. However, I would like to also add that the functioning of Congress has changed over the years. Initially Congress was meant to protect the interests of the people and the states which constituted the confederacy. However, increased partisanship over the years has made the operations of Congress impossible through the creation of legislation gridlocks. The end result of these gridlocks has been the adoption of legislations that hurt the general public. For example, the 2013 sequester that called for budget cuts by the government were something that both parties in Congress, the GOP and Democrats, would compromise about. I also agree that a legislator from Delaware is no different from one from Rhode Island. All these legislators seek to protect the interests of their respective political parties that sponsored them to Congress.
Regarding the changes in the presidency, I agree that there has been a drift from what the framers of the constitution had intended. More powers have been concentrated on the presidency. This is not to mean that other arms of government remain are not functional. The concentration of the power of the presidency has been due to the unreliability of partisan legislatures, both Congress and Senate, which make it difficult to run government business due to the partisan gridlocks. This is the reason why there have been more presidential vetoes in recent years.
Looking at the idea of government involvement in the economy, I agree with the author that there should be limited control of government on the economy. In this way, small businesses and the private sector can be able to actively participate in the growth of the American economy. This is the reason why capitalism is one of the best economic systems in the world. However, I would also like to say that despite capitalism providing opportunities for all, it is a zero-sum economic system. There are losers and winners in the capitalist economy. This might be reason why Democrat-led governments, such the Obama administration, have introduced legislations such as the Obama care so as to see to it that the poor are also able to access services such as healthcare.
