This essay is written with the aim of explaining my decision to choose the University of Georgia as the place to pursue my PhD in Marriage and Family at the University of Georgia. It seeks to explain my motivation to join this institution as well as what I intend to do with the knowledge gained at this level.
First of all, my academic qualifications are very much aligned to the line of Psychology. I got a B.A in Psychology form the J.F. Kennedy University, Buenos Aires in Argentina. I passed with a GPA of 3.96. I then went for an M.A in psychology in the same institution where I got a GPA of 3.98. This indicates that I have a great deal of interest in this area. It is for this reason that I decided to go for a further degree in this area.
There are various factors that motivated me to want to continue with my studies, and especially in this line. Both my parents are professional psychologists, with my father having a PhD in the same and practicing both as a counselor and as a teacher. My mother, on the other hand, has masters in the same. These acted as my inspiration. Above all, there are the goals I have that I want to accomplish in my career life. I want a life that balances between research, clinical work and teaching. This implies that I have to get a good grounding in all of these so that I ca be a good practitioner. In explaining this, I would like to have a life that is more of a universally-oriented life. That way, I would manage to manage all the aspects of life and also counsel people on the same, besides transferring the information through educating others. After my PhD, I would use the knowledge gained in conducting research to find out what role the family plays in personality disorders management.
However, I could not continue with my PhD in Argentina because it is quiet hard to practice in this field in the country. Additionally, I had always wanted to live in the US, and this gives me a chance to do so. Besides, I have indicated that I would like a study program that integrates research, teaching and the clinical practice. This is very achievable if I join the institution since it has all these aspects. The institution also has a strong focus on the research aspect besides the attention given to clinical aspects. For instance, I am particularly impressed by the works of Lee Johnson who is a researcher in this field. I would really like to follow in his footsteps, and this would only be realized if I studies at the institution. I feel that it would be an honor to be mentored by the capable and well informed personalities who are found in this institution.
Lastly, I would also like to be in this institution since I have a liking for it. Being a psychologist, I am well aware that an individual can perform much better when placed in a favorable environment where one feels comfortable. I would be fully satisfied in this institution. Not only does it offer a program that would help me o satisfy my professional goals, it also offers an environment that I would be very comfortable in. it is for these reasons that I sincerely hope for a positive consideration.
