The article of my choice was, “In Search of the Chilean Paradise: Peruvians in Chile Forge a Community” by Soledad Ortega. The article was published in Report on Race and Migration. It basically discussed the struggles that Peruvians face when they come to Chile looking for a better life. There are times when they’re held as domestic slave and even forced to work for free. These individuals, however keep moving ahead to try to obtain sound employment.
This article relates heavily to immigration issues. People are known for moving around to different places in order to find more lucrative opportunities. Poverty has a way of motivating people to travel to areas that have more employment. People have to leave their families and send money back home to them. This is one of the more standard things associated with immigrants. The article underscores a lot of these issues, and it also talks about personal stories. Though some of the personal anecdotes are sad, unfortunately, it is not uncommon. People always take a chance when they move to a new area for work.
I thought the article was very informative and eye-opening. I learned that the Peruvians face a lot of the hardships that immigrants usually face. Clearly, it is a gamble to move to a new place and try to start over again. It bothers me that individuals seek to take advantage of people that are trying to pursue happiness. But, with determination and tenacity, they can overcome what ever gets in their way and keep working towards the goal that they wish to accomplish. I hope that one day it will be safe and beneficial for individuals to immigrate for better jobs.
