The appearance of birds, planes and the aspect of flying is a motif hat has been repeated in many of the songs. The appearance of these birds in the song Good Bye Blue sky is metaphorical. It is a representation of a long period of war and lack of peace. The blue sky is a representation of a sad phase of life. The saying goodbye means that the writer is expecting a new dawn, a period of happiness and stability.
The sounds of chirping birds can be heard in the film. The music is powerful and catchy. This is a representation of renewed strength for the society. The society has previously been sidelined. It has been at war for a long period of time. It is now time for people to be happy and to forget the past, the plight they have suffered and the atrocities they have tolerated. There are sounds inserted into the song “Good Bye Blue Sky” are those of flying airplanes. This is a metaphorical representation of an end of war. The planes are carrying soldiers who were at war. Many of them died here. In the film version of the song we see a white dove flying, at first very peacefully. Later it is destroyed by a Nazi eagle. The Nazi eagle exercises impunity on the face of the earth where it leads to shedding of blood. It then goes to England where it leaves a big monster. The monster becomes a warlord that releases warplanes. Gas masked people are then seen running away from the possible dangers of polluted air. Later, we see a union Jack that kills the monster eagle. From the eagle comes out the dove. This is a metaphorical representation of end of war and beginning of peace. The blood of the eagle goes down to the drain. A twang sound, like that of a banjo is heard in this experience.
The song “Comfortably Numb” tells us about the aftermath of the war. It uses motifs such as flying ship smoke and balloons to communicate its message effectively to the reader and audience. The appearance of ship smoke at a distance means that even though the war has been disastrous, peace and tranquility can be seen from a distance. Things will be okay with time. The flying balloons communicate that the hands of the writer, Pink Floyd felt light. It communicates the fact that he had lost weight due to hunger and famine prevailing at the time of the war. This is when his father died. The song tells us of the struggle that Pink went through at a tender age as he learnt to handle problems in life. The song is a composition of verses sang by the doctor and others that Pink sings. The film version of the song starts with Floyd being unconscious inside a hotel room. Pink is later dragged by the paramedic into his car after being injected with drugs. He is taken to a concert where is scheduled to perform. This is where flashbacks of his childhood start to haunt him. He finds a wild rat and takes it to his mother, who is overprotective. His mother complains about the rat and this makes Floyd to hide it in a shed.
Conclusion
The song is a soft one. It also catches the emotions of the audience. Floyd is going through difficult moments in life as a child hence the soft music. He has to bear the news that his father died while at war. He has to adapt to living with an overprotective mother, who does not give him the freedom to explore.
