What are your interests and passions?
Becoming a Probation Officer has been a passion of mine for many years, there are so many accomplishments you can have on a daily basis as to the impact you make in a person’s life. When you mention becoming a Probation Officer to some people, they immediately think you want to get a job just so you can lock people up or punish people, but that’s not what being a Probation Officer is all about. My interests and passions when I first thought of being a Probation Officer was when I thought about how I could help get offenders who were struggling with day to day life issues to get back on their feet in a positive way rather than in the negative way they were use to doing things. Or in other words help them to be more productive members of society. After all being a Probation Officer is all about public safety.
How do they blend with your college/career goals as a student?
My criminal justice classes has all blended together to better explain the theories of criminals and crime, and I feel will in the long run equip me to be a more knowledgeable Probation Officer in my career. My criminal justice classes as a student explains what I will face in the “real world” as a Probation Officer, such as; having a caseload, a client who has done something that was not allowed in their court order and you need to file a report to revoke their probation, a client who is unwilling to participate on probation, all of these instances that you wouldn’t ordinarily know what to do unless you had went to college.
Also, my criminal justice classes prepares me as to how to; document reports, court reporting, court appearances, interacting with family members, being a good communicator, being organized, self-discipline and last but definitely not least how to always stay professional.
