Professionalism is a word associated to professionals in the way they exhibit the outcome in which a specific profession demands. Many people in the world are associated to a profession, but it is only when an individual demonstrates highest degree of standards required by a particular profession that he becomes a professional. Professionalism is reflected in the way individuals demonstrate their professional capabilities, exhibition, knowledge and experience which is mostly derived from the profession.
Professionalism is very important in every business. It garners lots of trust among customers and peers at workplace; in additions it fosters reliability and competence. In order for individuals to gain professionalism image he has to follow different criterions. Dress code shows the first impression to clients; therefore professional dress code is important. Punctuality is another important criterion. Meeting deadlines will always be convenient to the customer. Etiquette and communications skills are paramount to professionalism image. Finally understanding social taboos of groups ensure that we get to understand individuals who we work with.
Professionalism is characterized by different aspects. This includes behavior, attitude, mind-set, attitude, appearance and obstacles. Attitude is the most important aspect of professionalism; in most cases it increases the probability of success. Despite the fact that not all jobs require business wardrobe, appearance is very important. Courtesy ensure that professionals remain calm even if the environment is anxious. As a profession use of right words is important. Success in a profession is all about the mind-set. Professionals should always view themselves as being professionals.
Health care is one of the sensitive sectors, as a profession individuals need to have humane behaviors. They need to be courtesy when handling patients and telephone conversations. Use of polite language is also important. Any activity that they do should not threaten the safety of the patient. Teamwork, collaboration and communication need to be applied when handling patients. According to me professionalism is not all about putting on a suit and having academic qualification, it also entails a demonstration of a rounded personality. Professionals should be in a position to be role model and deliver what is expected of them.
