The representation of the woman in the modern society is very important. It provides a lot of information about the way society perceives the role of the woman and the position of the woman which is fundamentally steeped in the need to prevent the growth and establishment of a male dominated society and system for the past 50 years. The United States has moved from being a homogenous society to one that has actively integrated peoples from different backgrounds into its national polity – African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos and immigrants. This has culminated in a cultural system where the civil rights of women and the growth of cultural synthesis has created numerous characterization and representation of women in our country.
The different representations of women in cinema and television provide the perceptions of the disadvantages women are faced with under new social imperatives. The new family system has presented new challenges for women in the quest for seeking equality in society. Human Sciences has narrowed down these questions to define the position of the female in the social structure. Therefore, it is possible to use an interdisciplinary approach and perspective to study the media and how it plays out the power relationships, subjective representations and ideological transformations.

Motivation for Research
As a Peruvian woman who has been educated in various fields relating to Psychology, Family Therapy and Cultural Studies, I have gained a lot of experience and it is apparent that the way society views most women from Latin America goes a long way to contribute to our successes and failures in integrating into the American society. My experience as a lecturer and role in social activities and cultural diplomacy positions me to speak up for some of the issues relating to my society and people and promote a better North America and world.
It is apparent that the Ph.D. studies in McGill, will allow me to enrich Academic debates in my community. This can help me to incrementally add up to knowledge on communication and cultural matters about the Latin-American female representations in cinema and television by teaching, researching, and producing publications concerning possibilities of identifications and the impact in the way Latinas are perceived.
