Public school students should be required to wear uniforms because that would solve most of the problems that are supposed to be solved by being obliged to wear them. Students are supposed to feel united while at school and be supportive about one another which is why wearing a uniform would help achieve that. School uniforms are the solution for the problem that school students have and they should wear them in order to have better achievement in school.
There is more time for learning because students do not have to worry about their clothes and can concentrate on their studies. The peer pressure is relieved because all of the students wear the same uniforms and it is less likely than somebody can be mocked. Students can reveal their individuality in spite of wearing uniforms because they will learn how to present themselves to the world through their personalities and not through their styling and clothes. There is less ridiculing of other students because all of them must have the same appearance. There is much benefit for wearing uniforms in public schools because it makes students closer to one another. Even if they do not like to wear uniforms, they will sympathize with each other.
Uniforms foster the spirit of community and make students feel as if they were united in their schooling process. Also, there must be the improvement in discipline of students and in their presence in classes. They will not feel the pressure to be dressed fashionably or to belong to any other group apart from the school. Even though students who come from rich families can purchase more uniforms and change them more frequently, students who come from poor families can get financial help to buy more than one uniform so that the financial gap can be hidden.
Some students do not feel comfortable wearing uniforms, but it is a better option than allowing students to express that they are members of a certain gang which causes trouble. Moreover, students have much more time to become better prepared for class because they do not have to waste time choosing their clothes and they would have to wear different clothes every day. Even though some students do not feel comfortable wearing uniforms, this problem can be solved by helping them find the size that fits.
Wearing uniforms costs less than wearing a variety of clothes and parents do not have to buy so many pieces of clothing for school because the uniform is a good solution. There are problems concerning education which cannot be solved with uniforms, but that does not mean that not wearing uniforms would solve these problems.
The majority of parents as well as teachers are in favor of wearing school uniforms because of all the benefits they gain. There is more discipline, safety, academic achievement is better and the school has a good reputation. There is also the issue of the profit that the companies which produce uniforms make, but that is not an issue because ordinary clothes cost more than school uniforms and do nothing for to improve the spirit of the school. Even when students wear uniforms which all look the same, they can express their diversity by using other ways and means of expression. Moreover, they are able to wear whatever they want while they are not in school. Uniforms are not free, but they still cost less than clothes that would have to be different every day.
When school uniforms are obligatory, this relieves tension between students and parents because parents do not have to worry about the way their children will be dressed at school. Uniforms make going to school and school preparation more efficient because there is less to worry about. Students are also at ease because they always now what they will be wearing and they know that other students will be wearing the same uniform. This shared experience brings them together which makes the school spirit stronger and forms the community of enthusiastic students and teachers. Parents have less to take care of as well because it is not difficult to prepare a school uniform for wearing.
There is the dress code in school whether the students are required to wear uniforms or not and this is made easier if the uniforms are obligatory. All of the students are equal and nobody can wear luxury products and cause envy. Also, the students from poorer backgrounds will not stand out because they cannot afford expensive clothes. All of this makes students feel like they belong to the same team and they will be stronger in every way.
Uniforms are durable and buying several is a good investment because it will still cost less than buying new clothes for every new season. Also, students can save money and buy more expensive clothes for their leisure time. Wearing uniforms teaches students discipline and that is why they should wear them while at school. Maybe, they will become artists when they grow up and they will not have to wear uniforms, but it is good for them to get used to discipline from an early age. This will make them good citizens and they will always know their rights. Wearing uniforms is connected to academic success which means that there are good chances for such students to go to college.
There are many arguments in favor of wearing uniforms to school, but “The most longstanding and widespread theme has been that uniforms reduce effects of social disparity” (Bodine 67). This is true because students who wear the same outfit to school cannot think badly about the clothes of their peers. If all students are required to wear uniforms, then all of them are considered to be equal and this is a positive outcome of the obligation of wearing uniforms to public schools.
The first reason of imposing the rule of wearing uniforms has been to eliminate the difference between the rich and the poor and this measure is efficient. There are many other benefits of wearing uniforms and academic success is one of the most important. Social equality of the students was soon considered less important compared to other issues that are improved by wearing uniforms: “school safety, school climate, shoplifting, peer pressure, family stress, self-expression, esprit de corps, individual versus community needs and rights, truancy, competitive dressing, and commercial influences on the young” (Bodine 67).
It is obvious that there are more arguments in favor of the students being required to wear uniforms in public schools because it makes the educational system more powerful. The issues are educational, financial, political, democratic and most of all, they are related to the general well-being of students. Uniforms should be obligatory because the students become well equipped citizens if they learn about discipline and about the community spirit while they are still studying. When they become adults, they will be responsible and most of them will graduate from college. Uniforms are a good investment in the long-term because they help students learn about responsibility and about the spirit of community. They will feel empathy for other people later in life because they share the same experience with other students while in school.
