Essay On Small-group Tutorial Writing

Writing has been a learning experience for me since I began this course. Through this writing experience, I have learnt important tools like organization of academic papers, structure of arguments, persuasiveness, and formatting my papers according to the referencing style that I use. The most useful tutorial that I attained from this course was how to make an analysis of any piece of literature. Genre analysis, an assignment that took a reasonable proportion of this course, was a key catalyst for this process. Genre analysis papers allowed me to differentiate between analyzing and summarizing of literature pieces.
My view of, analyzing and summarizing, the two terms changed when I enrolled in this course since I learnt from the teacher’s comments that analyzing mostly focuses on describing the contents of a given piece of literature while summarizing entails reiterating what a given author says in a few words. Understanding this concept helped to change how approached genre analysis assignments eventually improving the quality of my work. In addition to this useful tutorial I also gained some valuable tools from this course. However, they are two important tools that I will take away with me as I end this course. First of all, I was able to learn how to organize my arguments systematically so that the reader can easily follow and enjoy my writing without struggling. Secondly I learned how to be convincing enough in the way I structure my arguments so as attract readers to my writings. I Intend to embrace these two important tools in the future not only in writing but also in making speeches and when giving my opinion about a given issue.
This course has also provided an opportunity to learn from the mistake of others through small-group tutorials. In these groups I have been able to learn that failure to proof-read papers before submission has been a major problem among students. Grammatical and mechanics errors lower the quality of the papers of many students yet at times the papers contain very concrete arguments. As victim of this problem, I have resolved to be starting my academic papers as early as possible in the future. This will be an important strategy of creating more time to re-read my paper and correct any mistakes that it may contain. Early submission also creates time for peer reviewing which helps eradicate errors that one cannot note in one’s piece of work. Giving one’s paper to another person to read it helps eliminate these kind of errors. It is therefore, worthwhile to conclude that this course has not only helped me grow academically but has also given me lifetime skills.
