1. What are the challenges in making judgments about performance determinants in a dynamic business environment?
The challenges involved in judging performance determinants in an ever-changing business environment include the methods used in influencing performance determinants and these are:
a) A change in the structure, systems and the programs used- The systems and programs used have to be modified accordingly so that they can pave way for influencing the performance determinants (Yukl, 2009).
b) Competitive strategy-The kind of decisions that the top executives make are very crucial in influencing the performance determinants of an organization.
c) Leadership Behavior-behaviors that are change oriented, task-oriented and relations oriented have to be used in the right way and environments. Failure to apply them in the most appropriate manner is a great challenge.
2. Discuss the perils of sub units within an organization making decisions which are not compatible. What are the likely consequences?
The leaders at different subunits may make decisions that are incompatible with each other. The consequences include resistance by different managers at different subunits, conflict and disagreements on the vision and objectives of the organization. This may lead to constrains within the organization like the formation of coalitions. Strong external stakeholders may take advantage of the incompatibility of decision within a company and affect the pricing, labor laws, legal and safety obligations which could be a threat to the competitiveness of a company.
3. Discuss the merits and pitfalls of case studies in understanding successful leadership.
