The Washington monthly,
Dear editor,
I recently came across an article in your publication that came out in the November/December edition 2013.the article gave an in depth analysis and examination into the increased rates of high school dropouts throughout the country. The article sited lack of interesting themes and subjects in school and poverty as the main driving forces behind the increased rates of cases high school drop outs throughout the country.
I agree with the article that the number of high school dropouts is increasing at an alarming rate and that if this issue is not curbed it could lead to a national crisis in terms of competent manpower and the general intelligence level of the country in a few years. I am also in strong agreement with the assertion that poverty and lack of a clear curriculum that captures the interests of the students are the main driving forces behind the alarmingly increasing number of high school drop outs throughout the continent of the United States.
Research conducted has shown that students from financially well off neighborhoods tend to stay in school to the very completion of the learning process. Students from low income neighborhoods seem to be dropping out of school at an alarming rate. This is perhaps because they come from a poor background and they prefer dropping out of school and seeking employment instead of learning. What they fail to see is that the learning process prepares them for more lucrative and sustainable employment opportunities which are reliable and in most cases not against the law.
Lack of a clear curriculum that captures the interests of the students and makes learning exciting also plays a pivotal role in determining whether a student stays in school or drops out. Students usually go high school with high expectations of both the educational and social aspects of high school life. This leads to frustrations once they get into high school and are completely disinterested with the curriculum and find it boring and not living up to their expectations.
Thank you for your informative article and relentless focus on contentious issues affecting mainstream society.
