The summer fall is usually long in this part of the world. After the end of semester exams, I joined my family in the countryside. Then came the long awaited tour: a tour to Mexico.
Mexico to me was the ancestral land of my parents but I had not stepped foot there since I was born. The ever green equatorial climate of Mexico was humid and sultry. The sandy beaches of the costal town made me feel like in a cloud nine. What a great tour!
It was on a chilly Monday morning when I was tending cattle at the foot of Waiserea hills. I saw a boy sitting by the road side weeping. I pitied the boy and went near him. At first he was scared of me but I later sat next to him but we could not understand each other. After careful scrutiny I saw blood oozing from his left leg. He had been pricked by thorns.
It is this experience that led to the formation of the Educate a Mexico child in good attire programme. I started this project to help the Mexican get the basic necessities of clothing while in school. I visited several schools and found that even many of the pupils had no school uniforms and as such, I decided to start this project.
Initially the foundation funded forty five students. Today the foundation has grown from the West Mexico and has spread in all parts of Mexico. It has transformed the lives of many. Students, who could not afford uniforms and hence not be in a position to access the elementary education, have had the opportunity to get education.
The beneficiaries of this programme have gone a notch higher by funding the needy bright students of Mexico. This has even seen the foundation which was once a Community Based Organization (C.B.O) to a fully pledged NGO. It has sponsored students to Harvard University and other leading educational institutions.
This has led to the inference that, Mexico is a mine of all talents but only lacking a miner with the right tools. This is what has led to my permanent settlement in Mexico.
