The ideology of domesticity
The women played an important role in the ideology of domesticity. Domesticity is an act of living together in a family and a home. The home life started during the 1800s and it was a time when people considered that women should stay and work at home instead of going outside. The women were expected to perform different tasks at home for other family members. Later educating women through different manuals and conventions changed the concept of domesticity. The women started the feminist movement and were informed that both men and women have equal rights. The paper investigates that how domesticity took its shape starting from the Roman time to its current form in the present time.
It was noticed in the seventh century that women lack basic rights. Benjamin Henry Latrobe was an architect who created the picture of women that are working in the field. The women were found as slaves in tobacco fields during 1798s, and pregnant women were also found in the field. It was viewed that during seventieth-century women, daughters, and wives were sold and property laws were applied to them. The scope of the domestic life was realized during the eighteenth century. It was a time when it considered that domesticity is the proper place for women to fulfill their duties to God, their families, and society. The motherhood and childbearing have played the significant role in shaping up the home making. In the 1820s, the culture of true womanhood was arises and discussed that true woman should possess different core virtues. It was believed that true women should be pure. The sexual purity was considered an important factor for a woman. The woman was no woman at all without purity, and it was necessary for a young woman to control its sexual desires and remain virgin. It was mentioned that woman should be pious, concern about the religion and develop religious thoughts. During that women had increased their religious activities and represented value of it. In the 1830s, a network of Protestant woman delivered money to Africa and Asia for church mission. It was focused that a good woman needs to be submissive, passive, and obedient. The men were considered as dominant and superior over women, and true women should respect and submit to their man. The idea of domesticity was developed, and it was focused to educated a woman. The society had arranged different platforms to educate women about the importance of domestic life. The educated woman can support the whole family. The mothers and wives were especially focused on shaping the family life. During the nineteenth century, the culture of domesticity became popular in the US and Britain. It increased the value of womanhood and determined the role of the women in balancing the work and family life. It was focused on femininity and provided a new view of women’s role and responsibilities. The women education was highly focused, and it was perceived that mothers and views should have the strong qualification and degree. The women have organized different convention and movement to fight for their rights to sexual harassments, reproductive rights, domestic violence, and others. In 1848, convection was arranged in New York to focus on civil, social, and political rights of women and various religious conditions. It was discussed that men and women are equal, and both have same rights. The husband and wife have equal opportunities, and both can share the enjoyment and burdens of their home. The concept of feminism was raised during, and it was informed that men have more rights in all aspects of domesticity as compared to women. It was a struggle for the women to achieve equal social, political, and personal rights. The husband and wife both are responsible for managing the home life. Both women and men were presented at the convention, and the declaration was created. 32 men and 68 women signed it. During the twentieth century, different women started discussions about their life and issues related to domesticity.
The women are a major part of the home life, and ideology of domesticity is associated with women rights and their roles and responsibilities during the last many years. It was considered that the home is the best place for women to perform the different tasks like cooking, and others. Currently, women are working in offices, industries, hospitals, and other sectors.
