Gentlemen of the jury, this case is about a defendant who made claims that radically contradict the views of the church. He has made a claim that the Earth is not, but rather, it is the sun. Our views on the universe are that the earth is the center of the universe. This view has stood for centuries, and we have always put our full belief in it. The origins this view trace back to Plato and his student Aristotle. Plato explicitly stated that the Earth was a stationary sphere located at the center of the universe. He further postulated that the planets and the stars moved around the Earth in circles, outwardly arranged from the center.
“Myth of Er," a section of the Republic, is a book authored by Plato. It describes the universe as the spindle of necessity. This spindle is attended by the sirens as well as turned by the three Fates. Working closely with Plato, Exodus of Cindus created a more mathematical description of the planets’ movements basing his facts on Plato’s dictum. This dictum stated that all occurrences in the heavens can be explained by the motion of the Earth. Then, Aristotle made an elaboration on Exodus’ theory by placing a circular Earth.
Ladies and gentlemen, the defense may place an argument that according to thorough research, the moon is the only heavenly sphere in the universe which revolves around the Earth. Galileo also claims that the planet Jupiter has moons that orbit around it. Furthermore, he talks about Sunspots on the surface of the sun and states that the surface of the moon is rugged in nature. Another of his claims is that he used a telescope to observe the behavior of the planet Venus and discovered that it has faces similar to our moon. So for that reason, Venus also moves around the sun. According to him, heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones. It is quite evident that he has borrowed some of his views from Nicolas Copernicus. Copernicus too developed a cosmology that places the sun at the center.
Such claims are very dangerous to the church. Not only are they blasphemous, but have the ability to cause discord among our members. Galileo’s claims can mislead believers and turn them against the church. We as a church have held the geocentric view upheld even by some of the most renowned scholars. Therefore, such heresy can set the whole society into disarray. It will undermine both the authority and influence of the Roman Catholic Church.
Therefore, at the conclusion of this case, I would kindly ask the jury to find the defendant guilty. The church has not met its burden of proof. Thank you.
