The article talks about the evolutions of the concept “stereotype”. At the beginning of the 20th century, stereotypes were considered as something exclusively negative. There were said to build misunderstandings, conflicts and even lead to racism, sexism and other “isms”. However, in due time, people realized that stereotypes really are based on something at least partially true. Some believe that they are a good start when learning about a new culture. As it turns out, they simply portray the differences between different groups of people. Nowadays, it is believed that such differences need to be understood and accepted, not neglected. The ability to “categorize” the people one communicates with is rather important. It can not only improve communication, but also help one find the right friends, connections and place in this world. Stereotypes can serve as something useful as they often do truly capture accurately the cultural particularities of a country or group of people.
Stereotypes are often misunderstood in business. Now that so many businesses have gone global, it is more important than ever to understand the cultural differences. These cultural differences often start off in humanized versions as stereotypes and serve as the first bridge to mutual understanding.
The subtleties of stereotyping still need to be greatly research and understood. This has not been studied so seriously in the past is it was regarded as completely unnecessary. It still needs to be discovered just how much people use the knowledge they obtain from stereotypes and how completely they believe them.
