The “Vagina Monologues” is one of the best episodic plays released in the 20th century. Authored by Even Ensler, and premiered at the Off Broadway Westside Theatre after being aired at HERE Arts Center around 1996, this play has been generally welcomed by women, feminists, and other sectors of the society, except the patriarchs. The first time I heard the title of the play, I was immediately occupied by the impression that this would be a totally offensive one and that the airing of this show would spark up controversies and even debates, because of the sensitivity of the topic being discussed and the slightly taboo terms used in the play, not once, not twice, but a lot of times.
After watching a Vagina Monologue Play, and reading the text for at least three times, I came to the conclusion that this is a great literary piece that deserves a lot more airing time than it receives every year, particularly every V-day. At first, I thought I was going to experience an uncomfortable feeling throughout my reading of the script but I was wrong. It turns out that you would only feel uncomfortable if you do not open your minds to the ideas being presented by the script’s author. In my case, I was surprised how liberal, but at the same time, professional and literary the author made the text appear, that even the stage plays about it, did not appear violative, not even a little bit. The Vagina Monologues is a literary piece that gets updated from time to time, particularly every V-Day according to the most recent issues about issues related to women. It does a good job of portraying such issues (e.g. sex, love, rape, violence, masturbation, genital mutilation, birth, and basically any other feminine experience), in a professional and non-disgusting way, even though they are generally considered as taboo or offensive even in today’s culture.
