Unionization in the United States of America is a blessing and attraction for the labor class. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the trend of labor unions or unionization has decreased by 20%. The main reason for this decrease is that the private companies are hiring the employees on contract or unfair employment contracts. Therefore, in these circumstances, the employees of many companies are consulting different domestic labor unions for the safety and security of their jobs. (Opinion, 2014)
Wages and salary package is one of the main reasons that create relation between the employees and the unions. The responsibility of the union is to negotiate and justify the salary package for the employees of any organization. Therefore, the main responsibility of the unions is to increase the wages of the employees in the society which is attracting the employees. (Lacoma)
Another main responsibility of the unions is to make sure that the environment and the surroundings of the labors is safe and secure. There are certain standards for the safety of workers at the workplace, according to the legislation of the state and international standards for industries. Therefore, the employee contacts labor unions when they feel that the working environment is not safe or according to standards. (Lacoma)
The third main responsibility of the union is to minimize the outsourcing of the organization to secure the wages of the local employees. The labor expenses in low wage countries such as China and India are providing cheap labor as compared to the labor in the United States of America and other European countries. Therefore, the employee contacts the labor union to secure their jobs and wage rates due to the outsourcing. (Lacoma)
In these circumstances, the employer must maintain the wages, working conditions and outsourcing tactics, according to the most favorable conditions for the local employees. The decrease in the trade union membership shows that the employees and employers are having good mutual understanding between them. For example, the employment law in any country is the main source of the rights of employers and employees. Therefore, the individuals consult the laws defined in the employment laws to make most favorable decisions at work. Similarly, the involvement of the government and the local authorities regarding the standards of the workplace are forcing the employees to maintain good safety conditions at work.
