Youth Initiatives Waste Pro is the name of the new organization. As the name suggests, the company deals with the waste management. It mainly specializes in the waste collection, recycling, and reuse of waste products which others have thrown away as trash, especially in the low-income dwellings. As can be identified, most people who are poor tend to take shortcuts when it comes to waste disposal or waste management in total. For instance, they throw away the garbage just outside their houses, making their compounds untidy. They have a common garbage dumping site which is rarely emptied. At times, the garbage heap becomes too big and they find another place just close to the first place and dump their waste there instead of emptying. It becomes a problem as the people living in this place becomes susceptible to diseases causing pathogens.
Most pathogens that cause diseases like dirty places and areas with stagnant water. All this can be found in slum-like dwellings where the organization will focus its efforts to collect the garbage so as to improve the sanitation condition of the place. For instance, mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. They also lay their eggs in damp places and areas with lots of dirt. Once they breed, they multiply fast. Mosquitos carry a virus that causes malaria, which, when not correctly treated can cause death, especially in young children. The also impending global epidemic known as Zika virus disease is spread through mosquito bites. Eliminating the waste will thus help solve health problems in the area.
The organization will be simple where the youths will collect the garbage from these areas, and it will be assembled in the organization premises. The waste which cannot be reused or recycled will be collected together and used to fill landfills. That which can be reused will be put into proper use such as making compost, manure which can be sold to farmers. The youth members can also engage in farming as an income generating activity to sponsor the garbage collection work. The rest of the waste will be recycled and sold to provide finances for the organization.
The mission of the company will be to help the community achieve the zero waste status. It will be done through teaching the community about how to recycle their waste, reuses it, and collecting of the waste that they cannot recycle or reuse and using it to fill landfills. The Zero Waste status will help improve the health condition of the community. The vision of the organization will be to lead in coming up with initiating solutions on ways of reusing and recycling waste products. The values of the organization include safety of all employees, customers and the public at large. Other values are customer service, environmental responsibility, strategic thinking and integrity.
As environmental scanning was conducted, several factors were identified which impact the success of this organization in achieving its mission. The first factor is the fact that few organizations deal with waste management in the identified region. Most of the competitors are concerned with providing quality waste management for the wealthy as they can afford to pay for the services offered. The company is not interested much in financial gain but rather helping the community solve their problem which makes it very likely to succeed compared to other companies. The other factor is the fact that there is a lot of emphasis on waste management by the world health organization and the government. Since it impacts a lot on health, getting funding will not be a problem. The government and other donors will provide much of the financing and thus the organization will be financially stable to cater for the needs of the community fully. The other factor is the strong organization and management skills of the team in charge of the organization. Their leadership and expertise will drive others to work towards the achievement of the mission and vision of the organization.
Two main programs relate to the portfolio of the organization. The first one focuses on garbage collection while the second focuses on either recycling or reuse of the garbage collected. Garbage collection helps to eliminate buildup waste in low-income and slum-like dwelling in the country. It also helps to solve the problem of health as breeding sites for disease-causing pathogens will be eliminated. Recycling or reuse of the waste also helps to eliminate the buildup waste problem as well as the health issue in this setting. It helps people living there learn how to reuse or recycle their waste or let the company manage the waste on their behalf. The needed inputs are garbage collection trucks, labor, gloves, hoes, shovels, gumboots, and fork hoe. The process involves moving to the garbage collection sites and loading the waste which is sorted by identifying that which can be reused, recycled, and that which will be used to fill landfills. That which can be recycled will be taken for remanufacturing. For reuse will be reused appropriately and the rest will fill landfills.
The business model under which the company will operate is a franchise. The main reason for choosing this model is the fact that the organization will be involved in several activities. It will educate the community, provide customer care services, collect garbage, recycle what can be recycled, and reuse what can be reused. The organization will also engage in farming by use of compost, manure from the garbage and also sell some of the compost manure. Among the costs the organization will include salaries and wages for the employees. The employees include truck drivers, people loading the garbage trucks and going around collecting the garbage. Those remanufacturing the waste will also be paid. The whole management will also be paid. The organization will incur costs related to recycling. The acquiring of machines needed as well as any other resources. Training fees will also be incurred as the company will need to hire professionals to train the community in waste management, and will have to pay for any expenses incurred during the training. Funding will come from donors, government and the organization proceeds from any transactions of a financial nature.
