Men are beings unlike other creatures who are never satisfied when all their biological needs and desires are fulfilled. The desire for more is endless in the life of human beings. The more a man achieves, the more their desires and needs increase mainly because what we achieves only stimulates the desires instead of filling our needs. This affects the growth of a society with the more a man continues to achieve with the needs increasing. The unanswered question is how we balance the needs and desires of an individual with the needs and growth of an individual? Well, John Stuart Mill states that human desires are triggered external control with the society holding in the needs. The society has expectation on everyman thus putting limitation on what we should achieve. This influences our desires and needs to prove to the society. This paper is a discussion of how we balance the needs and desires of an individual with the needs and growth of an individual?
In terms of our economical needs and desires, we are influenced to believe in what we have to influence into achieving more. The rich will be desire to have more and more while the poor in the society being restrained causing them to suffer with the limited resource. The state of mind in the rich and poor differ by what they have at hand. The poor in the society have fewer temptations to extend their desires. The relation between individual in the society and the desires is the anomie and the resource we have at hand. The more you achieve the more the society put pressure on your desires and needs while the less you possess the less the society puts pressure on you in relation to what you should achieve. The big question is how do we balance the needs and desires of human and of the society?
In order to balance the desires and needs of both parties, individual must first take accountability of what their want to achieve. What you desire to achieve is what the society desires to achieve. You and I make up the society. My desires and your desires are desires of the society. Robert D. Putnam explains this concept in the prosperous community. He states that residents of a ghetto community share same desires to have safe streets in their area but the collective action from each resident to control crime in this community fails to work. This is the society that has failed to work. When collective people in a society sets up a plan where everybody is expected to make their contribution, the outcomes of your contributions reflects on the desires and needs of a society. In our personal life, we are controlled by the society anomies and the society desires are controlled by members’ contributions. The desires and the needs of the society and the desires and needs of an individual can be balance by the contribution we make towards make the society we live in to be good. If one’s desire is to live in a secure environment free from crime, and the desires of the society to be free from crime, then an individual ought to take action towards ensuring that there is peace and security in his or her environment.
