The issue of ethical concerns in writing for academic purposes is one of grave concern for administration in higher educational institutions. Students are often caught in the web of plagiarism for different reasons. There are different types of plagiarism, but the general concept is that plagiarism reflects the use of someone else’s work without giving the person credit for their work. For some persons plagiarism is unintentional as it is difficult to write an essay that requires external sources and not use to the opinions and researchers of other persons. But these persons lack the skill of properly citing these sources and the work reflects plagiarism. On the other hand there are persons who deliberately use the works of other writers because they will not have to do much work on their own. Despite the reasons that students may have for plagiarizing, the ethical principles often shows that these students lack ethical and moral principles.
But, writers can use the work of other writers, but it is imperative that these users document the source of the information and give the original writer credit for the work that was done. Citations make reference to the works of other writers as they are used in your work. But there are different types of citations that could allow persons to avoid plagiarism and maintain academic integrity. In-text citation and bibliography referencing of another person’s work will help writers to avoid plagiarism. Documenting the works of the others includes the name of the original writer, the tile of the material, the date and the page number from where the information was taken.
In concluding, plagiarism is stealing the ideas and words of another person. Nonetheless, it is difficult to avoid plagiarism as persons will always borrow material from other writers. But, the key is to document the work that is borrowed, by citing the source of information through different citation styles. Plagiarism in any form is unethical and in order to maintain the moral values and the integrity of the society, students must recognize the value of ethical practices and avoid plagiarism.
