Patrol officers and other police officers often come across situations where they are conflicted between the choice of doing their duty with justice or relaxing the laws when it comes to civil politicians and people of importance. There are also cases when policemen who do their jobs justice, such as in the case of giving a speeding ticket to the mayor, they get called off their duty or get suspended because they did not get lenient where they were obliged to. Here, however, they need to follow the ethical rules of their duty and need to fulfill them with all honesty. (The Social Worker).
Firstly, the law is implemented on all citizens equally and has to be followed without any discrimination. This is similar to the idea of negating nepotism and favoritism when it comes to other cases like employment or getting favors. As a patrol officer, a person is answerable to the law and their job is to be honest and unbiased. Therefore, if the mayor gets a speeding ticket or a ticket for breaking a red light, then it is not something that needs to be reprimanded rather it is something that needs to be applauded and used as an example to show that citizens and people holding officers are equal in the eyes of the law. It is against ethics and moral judgment to let them off and only fine citizens.
As a patrol officer, the man needs to be honest and carry out this work truthfully. If he would ignore the mayor only because of her post, the next time she might be drunk and driving and could possibly get into an accident, thereby harming many lives. In such a case, the law can help her with the drink-driving issue, and it is important to serve justice here so that the society can become constructive rather than get destructive due to favoritism and dishonesty.
