The film, Wall-E (2008), directed by Andrew Stanton is set in post-apocalyptic earth where the human civilization can survive no more. Owing to the pollution of the environment, life is now dead on the planet which was once home to gazillion of living creatures. The human beings, the most advanced species of living creatures which resided on the planet have taken refuge in a huge spaceship. Wall-E, the protagonist of the film, is a robot who has the onus on his shoulders to scan the planet and clear up the waste which has accumulated all over. Wall-E falls in love with EVE, another robot who is much advanced than him, and he travels to the outer space to win his love.
On the aesthetic level, the animated film is a piece of cake to the eyes and one can only be flabbergasted by the excellent animation and graphics of this film. The vivid details of the visuals and the background score works very well for the film and the audience is left totally engaged in the experience of the cinematic medium. The robots show human-like emotions and this brings in the angle of artificial intelligence and its applications and possible results. Even the spaceship which is governed by an advanced form of AI makes one think about the negative possibilities of too much dependence on the actions and governance of the computer technology. The film explores the emotions of love, vested interests which can all be found in the scientific machinery with artificial intelligence.
The film is essentially a very touching tale of love which leaves the avid audience enthralled at the exquisiteness of emotions and innocent love. The purity of emotions and the bond between EVE and Wall-E is the driving force of this film. Another interesting aspect of the film is the portrayal of human beings as gluttonous, idle beings who are unable to do anything on their own and are thus totally dependent on the technological instruments and computer programs. This is a tell-tale sign of what the human race may actually expect to be in the far future if the race continues to neglect physical labor indulging in the life of idleness and luxury.
The film ends with the message that the human race must start from the very beginning and till the lands and make the earth a sustainable place for the population. Thus, the film propagates the paramount message of conservation of the nature which is the source of life on the planet. The cinematic representation of the ravages of the human race on the nature is alarming and it acts as a warning to the mankind of the possible disastrous results which are impending if man continued to tread on the path of indiscipline.
The film has been hailed all over the world by the audience. They have been engrossed by the touching love story between the two robots in the film. The film has found a place among the best films in animation in the history of cinema owing to its completeness as an artwork. It appeals to the human emotions, stirs the soul, makes one think about the serious issues about environment, technology and mankind. It has rightfully won the accolades of the film critics and has been awarded with honors.
